My research focuses on the memory, the trace.
Inspired by inhabited spaces, objects from memories, taken from my own photographs, fetishes or drawings, I explore this possibility of another dimension. I take the imprints, what remains of a passage, playing with the patterns from graphic details, sometimes organic and I use them as devices to the appearance of a strange in-between.
Often working in series, I appropriate these subjects through different techniques, charcoal, graphite, paint, torn or crumpled paper… I use contrasts between materials. Through it all, new perspectives are sketched out, other forms and worlds appear.
What interests me is what emerges from the erasure, the appearance/disappearance, when the medium captures the unspeakable and reveals it.
Tracking down details, diverting photos, reformulating contours until they are exhausted, I like to draw light, to give movement to images through the line, the play of chiaroscuro, of deformations.
To make the shadows dance is to cross time.
Analogous to metamorphosis, the in-between is that part of mystery that emerges in a place, an object, a body. It is a suspended moment, the tiny trace of a passage where I like to venture and perhaps see a presence emerge, an elsewhere.

Marie Donnève’s drawings and watercolors are from another imagination, another mystery. The immediacy of the situation is not the order of the day in these works where the past is read in layers that are superimposed and intertwined to form images that are connected to myth, childhood, and the unconscious. What we cannot name is palpable here, in a restricted, suggestive language, of the order of the reminiscence. Her “sex beasts”, hybrid creatures, strange and fascinating, intertwine like a single body, human and animal, terrestrial and chimerical, the duality ending up fused in the act. Where does the body of the other begin and what are its contours? What do we share of her spirit in this carnal game and to what extent do we look for ourselves? After all, so it seems to be the depth of the stakes of these small drawn squares. As for the work taken from the series of beds, its paper torn off like an image that has been over-manipulated, a triturated memory, is constantly replayed in hopes of finding… But finding what? What are we pursuing that we know is fleeting, ephemeral, impossible to resuscitate… In this desperate quest, Marie Donnève and her ghostly room address our incorrigible sensuality.

Marie masterfully works with charcoal, as the layers build up and create a thick and glossy material that dialogues with the transparency of the freshly laid charcoal. These different shades of blacks testify to the rigorous composition of these interior rooms (bedrooms, waiting rooms, boudoirs etc.). They take over the space and organize it as if each element of the composition were transformed into a sculpture-object. In Marie’s work, some of her drawings are at the limit of the fantastic and the absurd, it seems impossible to associate them with her views of interiors, I could even speak of two almost antagonistic worlds and yet it is in the globality of the work, in the reunion of these differences that the strangeness of her world can be captured and that she has found the indescribable bridges to bring them together. It is up to each of us to weave the links between all these series, to discover our own interrogations.
